Sincere Repentance

Return, O Israel, to the LORD your God, for you have stumbled because of your iniquity. Take words with you and return to the LORD; say to him, “Take away all guilt; accept that which is good, and we will offer the fruit of our lips (Hosea 14:1-2).

Although repentance is about doing something (the Hebrew verb is “to turn/return”) rather than just saying something, it often begins with the speaking of words. Yet the very wrongs for which repentance is needed can keep us from finding the right words. The grace of this passage, however, is that the divine command to “take words” is immediately followed by the divine provision of the very words that are to be taken. The divine grace that responds to our confession of sin is already at work in eliciting it.

Our words, the “fruit of our lips,” are all we need to confess and receive forgiveness. Where once animal sacrifice was required, now we can confess personally to God with nothing more to offer than our repentance. What a blessing! Take time today to respond to God’s grace with a sincere confession of your heart.
